Planters Warts

Flat. Plantar. Common. While most people carry the virus that causes these and other types of warts, you can treat your warts and stop the spread. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.

  • Turn up the heat

Apply a heating pad set to 122°F (50°C) for 30 seconds at a time, one to four times, to regress common warts and prevent regrowth

  • Control contact

If you have warts of any kind, avoid scratching them; if you have genital warts, limit sexual contact with others and see a healthcare professional

About This Condition

Warts are common abnormal skin growths caused by one of many types of human papilloma virus, which infects the outer layer of skin.

Common warts (verruca vulgaris) can appear on any part of the body but are more common on the fingers, hands, and arms. They are most common in people 30 years old or younger, but can occur at any age and are almost universal in the population. Other types of warts also exist, including flat warts, genital warts, laryngeal papillomas, and others.

Symptoms

Appearance and size of warts depend on the location and the amount of irritation and trauma. Common warts are sharply demarcated, rough-surfaced, round or irregular in shape, firm, and either light gray, yellow, brown, or gray-black in color. They are small nodules ranging in size from 2–10 mm in diameter. Plantar warts (on the bottoms of the feet) are flattened and may be exquisitely tender. Flat warts, more common in children and young adults, are smooth, flat-topped yellow-brown elevations, most often seen on the face and along scratch marks. Genital warts (also called condyloma acuminata or venereal warts) are soft, moist, small pink or gray polyps that enlarge and are usually found in clusters on the anus and the warmer, moister areas of the female and male genitalia. Genital warts caused by HPV are considered a major cause of cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. All warts are contagious.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips

Warts can be spread by contact, and the transmission can occur between two people as well as between different parts of the body of the same person. To prevent the spread of the virus, warts should not be scratched. Genital warts are spread by sexual contact.

A study of HIV-infected and HIV-negative women found that current smokers were over five times more likely to develop genital warts than nonsmokers.

Holistic Options

Distant healing is a conscious, dedicated act of mental activity that attempts to benefit another person’s physical or emotional well-being at a distance. A controlled study found that distant healing by an experienced healer for six weeks had no effect on the number or size of warts.

A controlled study found that the application of 122ºF heat from a heat pad for 30 seconds led to regression in 25 warts. After 15 weeks, none of the regressed warts had regrown.

Hypnosis is a widely recognized treatment for warts. One controlled trial found that twice-weekly hypnosis sessions resulted in greater wart disappearance than did medication, placebo, or no treatment after six weeks of therapy.

PKU

Early diagnosis is key to treating PKU, a rare genetic disorder that results in an amino acid imbalance in the body. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.

  • Fight back with fish oil

Take a daily supplement containing 500 mg for every 8.8 pounds of body weight to prevent deficiencies caused by the PKU diet

  • Seek support from supplements

Prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies caused by the PKU diet by taking supplements that provide the daily value of L-tyrosine, vitamin K, vitamin B12, and selenium

  • Discover branched-chain amino acids

Under a healthcare provider’s supervision, improve mental functioning by adding amino acid supplements to each meal and at bedtime; take 150 mg per 2.2 pounds (1 kg) of body weight each of valine and isoleucine, and 200 mg per 2.2 pounds (1 kg) of body weight of leucine

  • Monitor amino acids in your diet

Work with your healthcare provider and a nutritionist to maintain a phenylalanine-restricted diet that is nutritionally adequate

  • Pass up aspartame

Help prevent increased phenylalanine intake by steering clear of soft drinks, candy, and other foods and drinks sweetened with aspartame (Nutrasweet)

About This Condition

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare genetic disorder that results in excessive accumulation of the amino acid, phenylalanine, and reduced levels of the amino acid, L-tyrosine, in the blood.

If untreated, high levels of phenylalanine can cause severe mental retardation, behavioral disturbances, and other brain and nerve problems. Fortunately, newborn screening programs now identify most cases of PKU in the United States and other countries. Early diagnosis and treatment is the key to reducing or preventing PKU-related conditions. Gene therapy is currently being researched as a possible cure. Research is also being conducted on methods to decrease levels of phenylalanine in the blood through the use of certain enzymes and amino acids.

Symptoms

Infants with PKU may be lethargic, feed poorly, and have a “mousy” odor from their sweat and urine. Eczema, sensitivity to sunlight, and light skin are also characteristic of PKU. Symptoms of children with untreated PKU include significantly diminished mental capacity, hyperactivity, and seizures.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips

Access to PKU resource/support groups, and education of family members may help simplify the complex dietary restrictions and improve one’s ability to follow them.

PKU during pregnancy (maternal PKU) is of particular concern. Excessively high or low levels of phenylalanine may occur during pregnancy, both of which may adversely affect the fetus. Maternal PKU can lead to fetal malformations, including small head size (microcephaly), heart abnormalities, failure to grow properly in the uterus (called intrauterine growth retardation), and mental retardation. Adverse effects on the offspring can be reduced and by careful dietary control both prior to and during pregnancy. Consultation and follow-up visits with medical and nutritional specialists are necessary for effective monitoring and dietary guidance in people with PKU.

Pinworms

Food and water: sources of life—but also possible sources of parasites. Rid yourself of these intestinal pests and the infections they cause. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.

  • Stay hydrated

When diarrhea strikes, replace lost fluids and replenish electrolytes by drinking sports drinks or other rehydration solutions

  • Make prevention a priority

When traveling to areas where parasitic infections are common, don’t drink the tap water and avoid uncooked foods, foods prepared by street vendors, ice, and fruits that cannot be peeled

  • Try a natural treatment

Talk to a professional about treating parasitic infections with natural antimicrobials, such as propolis, and berberine-containing herbs, including barberry, Oregon grape, goldenseal, and goldthread (Coptis chinensis)

About This Condition

Parasites are organisms larger than yeast or bacteria that can cause infection, usually in the intestines. The most common parasites to infect humans in the United States and Canada are giardia (Giardia lamblia), Entamoeba histolytica, cryptosporidium (Cryptosporidium spp.), roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis), and tapeworm (Taenia spp.).

Infection with parasites can be life-threatening in people with severe impairment of immune function. People should consult a physician if they suspect a parasitic infection.

Caution: Any herb potent enough to kill parasites could potentially harm the person taking it. Although some herbs have antiparasitic actions in test tubes, none has been adequately tested for efficacy or safety in humans. Safe and proper use requires the skills of an experienced practitioner.

Symptoms

Parasite infections can lead to a variety of symptoms, including gas, bloating, diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal cramping and pain, constipation, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, rash, cough, itching anus, and bloody or foul-smelling stools.

Pimples

Break free from acne breakouts. Put your best face forward with a few simple, yet effective, acne fighting actions. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.

  • Clean your skin

Use over-the-counter treatments containing benzoyl peroxide, such as Stridex Clear Gel, Clearasil Maximum Strength Acne Treatment, or Oxy Oil-Free Maximum Strength Acne Wash to treat mild acne outbreaks

  • Use acne-fighting lotions

Lotions that contain niacinamide gel (4%) and tea tree oil (5%) can be helpful

  • Try zinc

60 to 90 mg a day of this mineral improves some people’s acne

  • Add copper

If taking extra zinc, your body will need 1 to 2 mg each day of copper to avoid deficiency of this mineral

About This Condition

Acne vulgaris, also known as common acne, is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands of the skin. It consists of red, elevated areas on the skin that may develop into pustules and even further into cysts that can cause scarring.

Acne vulgaris occurs mostly on the face, neck, and back of most commonly teenagers and to a lesser extent of young adults. The condition results in part from excessive stimulation of the skin by androgens (male hormones). Bacterial infection of the skin also appears to play a role.

Symptoms

Acne is a skin condition characterized by pimples, which may be closed (sometimes called pustules or “whiteheads”) or open (blackheads), on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders. Most acne is mild, although some people experience inflammation with larger cysts, which may result in scarring.

Holistic Options

Acupuncture may be helpful in the treatment of acne. Several preliminary studies have reported that a series of acupuncture treatments (8 to 15) is markedly effective or curative in 90 to 98% of patients. Besides traditional Chinese acupuncture using needles alone, a technique called “cupping” is frequently used in the treatment of acne. Cupping refers to the use of cup-shaped instruments to apply suction to the area being needled. Two preliminary trials of cupping treatment for acne reported marked improvement in 91 to 96% of the study participants. Controlled trials are necessary to determine the true efficacy of acupuncture and other traditional Chinese therapies in the treatment of acne.

Some hypnotherapists believe that hypnosis might help prevent facial scarring associated with acne. In one case study, a patient was instructed to say the word “scar” in place of picking her face, and the scratch marks resolved. The underlying acne was unaffected.

Piles

The itching and burning caused by hemorrhoids can make it difficult to sit still. How can you ease the discomfort and fight flare-ups? According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.
  • Choose foods with fiber Eat more whole grains, bran, and vegetables, or take fiber supplements such as psyllium—along with plenty of fluids—to ease the passage of stools
  • Try a topical astringent Relieve hemorrhoid symptoms by frequently applying a product that contains witch hazel
About This Condition
Hemorrhoids are enlarged raised veins in the anus or rectum.
Common hemorrhoids are often linked to both diarrhea and constipation. Although the belief that hemorrhoids are caused by constipation has been questioned by researchers, most doctors feel that many hemorrhoids are triggered by the straining that accompanies chronic constipation.3 Therefore, natural approaches to hemorrhoids sometimes focus on overcoming constipation.
Symptoms
Symptoms of hemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a lump in the anus that can bleed and become inflamed, often causing discomfort and itching. There may also be bright red blood on the toilet paper, the stool, or in the toilet bowl.
  • Get relief from flavonoids Reduce symptoms with a daily dose of healthful flavonoids; take 1,000 to 2,000 mg of hydroxyethylrutosides or diosmin, or take horse chestnut extract containing 90 to 150 mg of aescin

Photosensitivity

A red rash that breaks out on your body during sun exposure may mean you’re “allergic” to light. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.

  • Try beta-carotene

Increase your tolerance to sunlight by supplementing with beta-carotene

  • Shield your skin from the sun

Steer clear of excessive sun exposure by wearing protective clothing or smoothing on sunscreen

  • Get a checkup

Visit a qualified healthcare provider to find out if your photosensitivity is caused by a treatable medical condition or a side effect of medication

About This Condition

People with photosensitivity have an immunological response to light, usually sunlight. They typically break out in a rash when exposed to sunlight; how much exposure it takes to cause a reaction varies from person to person. Several conditions, such as erythropoietic protoporphyria and polymorphous light eruption, share the common symptom of hypersensitivity to light—also typically sunlight.

People taking certain prescription drugs (sulfonamides, tetracycline, and thiazide diuretics) or herbs (St. John’s wort, for example) and those with systemic lupus erythematosus have increased susceptibility to adverse effects from sun exposure.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include a pink or red skin rash with blotchy blisters, scaly patches, or raised spots on areas directly exposed to the sun. The affected area may itch or burn, and the rash may last for several days. In some people, the reaction to sunlight gradually becomes less with subsequent exposures.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips

People with photosensitivity need to protect themselves from the sun by using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing (such as long-sleeved shirts), and avoiding excess exposure to the sun.

Hay Fever

Hay fever attacks are acute episodes of allergies to dust mites, mold, pollen and other airborne allergens. Homeopathic medicines can be safely used for self-medication. It is possible to reduce the frequency and intensity of hay fever episodes over time with the help of a homeopathic physician.

Primary Remedies

Allium cepa

Indications for this remedy include watery eyes and a clear nasal discharge that irritates the upper lip, along with sneezing and a tickling cough. The person usually is thirsty, and feels worse indoors and when rooms are warm, and better in fresh air.

Arsenicum album

A burning, watery, runny nose with a stuffy, tickling feeling during allergy attacks suggests a need for this remedy. Swelling below the eyes and a wheezy cough are common. The person may feel chilly, restless, anxious, and is often very tired.

Gelsemium

A tired, droopy feeling during allergies with a flushed and heavy-feeling face suggest a need for this remedy. A sensation of dryness or of swollen membranes may be felt inside the nose—or the nose may run with irritating watery discharge, with the person sneezing frequently. Aching in the back of the head and neck, a trembling feeling, and chills along the spine are often seen when a person needs Gelsemium.

Natrum muriaticum

This remedy relieves runny nose alternating with periods of dryness and stinging in the nasal cavity.

Sabadilla

Long paroxysms of sneezing, itching in the nose with irritating runny discharge, a feeling of a lump in the throat, and watery eyes will all suggest a need for this remedy. The person may feel nervous during allergy attacks, and trying to concentrate can bring on drowsiness or headache.

Other Remedies

Apis mellifica

This remedy relieves nasal congestion with stinging pain, improved by cold air.

Euphrasia

This remedy can be helpful if the eyes are swollen and irritated with acrid tears or pus. The nose also runs, but with a blander discharge. Symptoms are often worse in the daytime and worse from warmth, and the eyes may hurt from too much light. The person can also have a cough in the daytime, which improves at night.

Ferrum phosphoricum

This is a very useful remedy in the early stages of any inflammation. Taken when allergy symptoms start, it often slows or stops an episode. Symptoms include runny eyes with a burning or gritty feeling, facial flushing, watery nose, and short, hard, tickling cough.

Galphimia glauca

This relieves spasmodic sneezing from hay fever.

Histaminum

This remedy relieves all symptoms from allergic origin.

Kali iodatum

This remedy relieves burning nasal discharge, especially if there is a feeling of constriction at the base of the nose.

Nux vomica

This remedy relieves hay fever that tends to occur in the early morning, upon awakening, with spasmodic sneezing.

Wyethia

Intolerable itching felt on the roof of the mouth and behind the nose—sometimes extending into the throat and ears—strongly suggests the use of this remedy. Everything in the person’s head feels dry and irritated, but the nose may still be runny.

Bronchitis Homeopathy Remedies

Primary Remedies

Bryonia

This remedy is often indicated when a cough is dry and very painful. The person feels worse from any movement, and may even need to hold his or her sides or press against the chest to keep it still. The cough can make the stomach hurt, and digestion may be upset. A very dry mouth is common, and the person may be thirsty. A person who wants to be left alone when ill, and not talked to or disturbed, is likely to need Bryonia.

Causticum

Bronchitis with a deep, hard, racking cough can indicate a need for this remedy. The person fees that mucus is stuck in the throat and upper chest, and may cough continually to try to loosen it. A feeling of rawness and soreness can develop, or a sensation as if a rock is stuck inside. Chills can occur along with fever. Exposure to cool air aggravates the cough, but drinking something cold can help. The person may feel worse when days are cold and clear, and better in wet weather.

Pulsatilla

Bronchitis with a feeling of weight in the chest, and a cough with choking and gagging that brings up thick yellow mucus, may respond to this remedy. The cough tends to be dry and tight at night, and loose in the morning. The fever may be worse in the evening and at night. Feeling too warm or being in a stuffy room tends to make the person worse, and open air brings improvement. Thirst is usually low. A person who needs this remedy often is moody and emotional and wants attention and sympathy. (This remedy is often helpful to children who are tearful when not feeling well and want to be held and comforted.)

Other Remedies

Antimonium tartaricum

This remedy is indicated when the person has a feeling of wet mucus in the chest, and breathing makes a bubbly, rattling sound. The cough takes effort and is often not quite strong enough to bring the mucus up, although burping and spitting may be of help. The person may feel drowsy or dizzy, and feel better when lying on the right side or sitting up.

Calcarea carbonica

This remedy is often indicated for bronchitis after a cold. The cough can be troublesome and tickling, worse from lying down or stooping forward, worse from getting cold, and worse at night. Children may have fever, sweaty heads while sleeping, and be very tired. Adults may feel more chilly and have clammy hands and feet, breathing problems when walking up slopes or climbing stairs, and generally poor stamina.

Dulcamara

When a person easily gets ill after being wet and chilled (or when the weather changes from warm and dry to wet and cool) this remedy may be indicated. The cough can be tickly, hoarse, and loose, and worse from physical exertion. Tendencies toward allergies (cats, pollen, etc.) may increase the person’s susceptibility to bronchitis.

Hepar sulphuris calcareum

The cough that fits this remedy is usually hoarse and rattling, with yellow mucus coming up. The person can be extremely sensitive to cold—even a minor draft or sticking an arm out from under the covers may set off jags of coughing. Cold food or drink can make things worse. A person who needs this remedy feels vulnerable both physically and emotionally, and may act extremely irritable and out of sorts.

Kali bichromicum

A metallic, brassy, hacking cough that starts with a troublesome tickling in the upper air-tubes and brings up strings of sticky yellow mucus can indicate this remedy. A sensation of coldness may be felt inside the chest, and coughing can lead to pain behind the breastbone or extending to the shoulders. Breathing may make a rattling sound when the person sleeps. Problems are typically worse in the early morning, after eating and drinking, and from exposure to open air. The person feels best just lying in bed and keeping warm.

Silicea (also called Silica)

A person who needs this remedy can have bronchitis for weeks at a stretch, or even all winter long. The cough takes effort and may bring up yellow or greenish mucus, or little granules that have an offensive smell. Stitching pains may be felt in the back when the person is coughing. Chills are felt more than heat during fever, and the person is likely to sweat at night. A person who needs this remedy is usually sensitive and nervous, with low stamina, swollen lymph nodes, and poor resistance to infection.

Sulphur

This remedy can be indicated when a person has had many bouts of bronchitis (sometimes the resistance has been weakened by taking antibiotics too often for minor complaints). The cough feels irritating, burning, and painful; yellow or greenish mucus may be produced. Problems can be worse if the person gets too warm in bed, and breathing problems at night may wake the person up. Redness of the eyes and mucous membranes, and foul-smelling breath and perspiration are often seen when a person needs this remedy.

Pernicious Anemia

Your body relies on B12 for healthy blood. Too little of this vital vitamin can lead to anemia and other health issues. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.

  • Get your B12

Manage mild deficiency with over-the-counter vitamin B12 supplements

  • Add vitamins to your vegan diet

If you follow a strict vegan diet, take a daily B12 supplement of at least 2.4 mcg

About This Condition

An abnormally low level of vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a factor in many disorders.

The absorption of dietary vitamin B12 occurs in the small intestine and requires a secretion from the stomach known as intrinsic factor. If intrinsic factor is deficient, absorption of vitamin B12 is severely diminished. Vitamin B12 deficiency impairs the body’s ability to make blood, accelerates blood cell destruction, and damages the nervous system. The result is pernicious anemia (PA). In the classical definition, PA refers only to B12 deficiency anemia caused by a lack of intrinsic factor.

True pernicious anemia is probably an autoimmune disease. The immune system destroys cells in the stomach that secrete intrinsic factor. Many people with PA have both chronic inflammation of the stomach lining, called atrophic gastritis, and antibodies that fight their intrinsic factor-secreting cells.

The term pernicious anemia is sometimes used colloquially to refer to any anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can be due to malabsorption of dietary B12 despite normal levels of intrinsic factor. For example, celiac disease and Crohn’s disease may cause B12 malabsorption, which can lead to anemia. Less common causes of B12 deficiency include gastrointestinal surgery, pancreatic disease, intestinal parasites, and certain drugs. Pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, and advanced stages of cancer may increase the body’s requirement for B12, sometimes leading to a deficiency state.

Low stomach acid, known as hypochlorhydria, interferes with the absorption of B12 from food but not from supplements. Aging is associated with a decrease in the normal secretion of stomach acid. As a result, some older people with normal levels of intrinsic factor and with no clear cause for malabsorption will become vitamin B12-deficient unless they take at least a few micrograms per day of vitamin B12 from supplements.

Caution: Pernicious anemia is a serious medical condition. When fatigue, often the first symptom of PA, is present, a qualified healthcare practitioner should be consulted. Symptoms of PA can be caused by other conditions, none of which would respond to vitamin B12 supplementation. Moreover, if true vitamin B12 deficiency exists, the cause—lack of intrinsic factor, general malabsorption conditions, lack of stomach acidity, or dietary deficiency—must also be properly diagnosed by examination and blood tests before the appropriate treatment can be determined.

Symptoms

Symptoms of severe vitamin B12 deficiency (regardless of the cause) may include burning of the tongue, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, intermittent constipation and diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, menstrual symptoms, psychological symptoms, and nervous system problems, such as numbness and tingling in the feet and hands. Most symptoms can occur before the deficiency is severe enough to cause anemia. Healthcare professionals have a series of laboratory tests that can determine B12 deficiency at earlier stages that are not accompanied by anemia.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips

Alcohol abuse can lead to gastritis and damage to the lining of the intestines, both of which can interfere with vitamin B12 absorption. If B12 deficiency is due to alcoholism, abstinence may prevent further impairment of B12 absorption

Bronchitis–What is it?

Bronchitis occurs when the mucous membranes that line the upper breathing tubes become inflamed. Acute bronchitis often follows a viral illness such as a cold or flu, and can last for several weeks. Chronic bronchitis may develop if a person has repeated bouts of illness that are not well cared for, or if other factors such as smoking, exposure to polluted air, and allergies have lowered the person’s resistance and made the lungs susceptible. Homeopathic remedies may help relieve discomfort caused by coughing and help the body overcome infection. Serious or prolonged bronchitis requires a physician’s attention.

Acne Vulgaris-Primary Remedies

Although most common during adolescence, acne can occur at other times in life, especially during times of hormonal shifts. Blackheads or pimples may be a problem on the face, neck, chest and back when pores become infected or clogged with oil. The bacteria involved is always present on normal skin. Therefore, improving the skin’s resistance to infection is important. Most cases of acne can be resolved through hygiene and nutrition. Homeopathic medicines may be helpful during flare-ups, but a chronic treatment, prescribed by an experienced homeopathic physician, is the most appropriate way to deal with severe or persistent skin problems.
Primary Remedies
Pulsatilla
This remedy can be helpful if acne is worse from eating rich or fatty foods, and aggravated by warmth or heat. It is indicated especially around the time of puberty, or when acne breaks out near menstrual periods. The person often has a fair complexion and is inclined toward soft emotions and moodiness, feeling worse in warm or stuffy rooms and better in fresh air.
Silicea (also called Silica)
A person with deep-seated acne along with a general low immune resistance, swollen lymph nodes, and a tendency toward fatigue and nervousness may benefit from this remedy. Infected spots are slow to come to a head, and also slow to resolve, so may result in scarring. A person who needs this remedy is generally very chilly, but inclined to sweat at night.
Sulphur iodatum
relieves acne located on the forehead and the back, aggravated by heat, and occurring periodically.
Other Remedies
Antimonium tartaricum
This remedy may be helpful for acne with large pustules that are tender to touch, with bluish-red marks that remain on the skin after active infection has passed. The person may be irritable, with low resistance to illness.
Calcarea carbonica
If a person with frequent pimples and skin eruptions is chilly with clammy hands and feet, easily tired by exertion, and flabby or overweight, this remedy may help improve the skin’s resistance to infection. People who need this remedy are often very anxious when overworked, and have cravings for sweets and eggs.
Calcarea sulphurica
Is a medicine appropriate for juvenile acne that suppurates and causes boils.
Calendula Gel
Applied locally stimulates the healing of pustules and limits the risk of superinfection.
Hepar sulphuris calcareum
Relieves pustular acne aggravated by cold weather, with a foul-smelling pus.

Peripheral Vascular Disease

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Aneurysm, Buerger’s Disease, Chronic Thromboangiitis, Occlusive Arterial Disease

Keep blood flowing freely through your legs and other parts of your body. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.

  • Support your circulation

Ask your healthcare provider for advice on restoring or maintaining good circulation by exercising, avoiding prolonged standing or sitting, and using compression stockings

  • Discover inositol hexaniacinate

Take 1,200 mg a day of this nutritional supplement to help prevent and treat skin ulcers caused by peripheral vascular disease

  • Say good-bye to smoking

Avoid the damaging effects of nicotine on blood flow by kicking the habit

About This Condition

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) refers to a variety of conditions that primarily affect the arteries of the body, with the exception of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. (Those are covered in the article on cardiovascular disease.) The most common areas for PVD are the arteries of the legs and upper arms, the carotid (neck) arteries, the abdominal aorta and its branches, and the renal (kidney) arteries.

The cause of most types of PVD is hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), which itself has many causes. Conditions affecting the veins, such as chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids, are not usually included in PVD.

PVD of the carotid arteries is a major cause of stroke. Intermittent claudication refers to pain in the lower legs after walking short distances and is caused by PVD of the leg arteries. One cause of erectile dysfunction may be PVD of the penis. Raynaud’s disease is a painful condition caused by spasms of arteries after exposure to cold. Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), also known as Buerger’s disease, is an uncommon PVD that occurs in both arteries and veins. This condition causes tender areas of inflammation in the arms or legs, followed by cold hands or feet.

Aneurysm is a ballooning of an artery due to weakening of the blood vessel walls. Aneurysms may be an inherited disorder or may be due to atherosclerosis. The most common aneurysm is abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), which occurs in the large artery that carries blood from the heart to the lower body. AAA is much more common in men, and risk increases with age. Large AAAs are usually surgically repaired because they can undergo life-threatening ruptures.

Symptoms

People with peripheral vascular disease may have symptoms of pain, aching, cramping, or fatigue of the muscles in the affected leg that are relieved by rest and worsened by elevation. Other people with peripheral vascular disease may have swollen feet and ankles accompanied by a dull ache made worse with prolonged standing and relieved by elevation. People with chronic peripheral vascular disease may have darkened areas of skin, leg ulcers, and varicose veins.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips

People with TAO are usually heavy smokers, and this is considered a major cause of the disease. It is important for people with TAO to quit smoking.

Holistic Options

Intravenous chelation therapy has been reported to be an effective treatment for PVD. A partially controlled study reported improvements after ten chelation treatments. However, two double-blind studies found no difference between chelation therapy and a placebo in patients with intermittent claudication.

Preliminary reports suggest acupuncture may reduce pain and improve blood flow in TAO, but controlled studies are needed to better evaluate these claims.

Common Cold

Colds are viral infections that take hold when the body’s resistance is lowered because of fatigue, nutritional deficiencies or stress. Typical symptoms include: a stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, sometimes fever, achiness or lethargy, and often a sore throat or coughing. Homeopathic medicines can help relieve symptoms at every stage of the cold.

Primary Remedies

Arsenicum album

A person who has frequent colds, sore throats, and chest problems—with burning pain and feelings of weakness, restlessness, and anxiety—may benefit from this remedy. The person’s head may feel hot while the rest of the body is cold, and problems can be worse near midnight. The nose often feels stopped up, and the person may sneeze repeatedly, without relief. White, think, burning mucus may be produced.

Belladonna

This remedy relieves high fever of sudden onset with sweating.

Euphrasia

Red, watery, irritated eyes, frequent sneezing, and a mild, clear nasal discharge suggests a need for this remedy. The person may cough from irritation and from phlegm collecting in the throat. Symptoms can be worse at night, and the person tends to feel better from eating and lying down.

Natrum muriaticum

Colds with clear nasal discharge like egg-white, sneezing (which is often worse in the morning), headache, and a diminished sense of smell or taste may respond to this remedy. The person may develop cold sores around the mouth, and the lips can be chapped and cracked.

Nux vomica

This relieves spasmodic sneezing in the morning, with a dry nose during the night.

Pulsatilla

This remedy relieves non-irritant yellowish nasal discharge with a dry nose at night that becomes runny during the day, and loss of smell and taste.

Other Remedies

Aconitum napellus

This remedy relieves high fever of sudden onset, with a hot face and dry skin, especially after exposure to intense cold.

Allium cepa

This relieves spasmodic sneezing and runny nose with an irritating, watery discharge, improved by fresh air.

Baryta carbonica

This remedy is indicated for people who frequently catch colds from getting chilled. A runny nose and swollen upper lip, swollen lymph nodes, tonsils, and adenoids are typical symptoms. This remedy is often helpful to children who are bashful and slow to develop.

Dulcamara

When a person comes down with a cold after getting wet and chilled, or if colds come on when the weather changes, this remedy should come to mind. A stopped-up nose and face pain are likely. A person who needs Dulcamara also tends to have allergies.

Ferrum phosphoricum

This remedy relieves low-grade fever with weakness and tendency to nosebleeds and earaches.

Gelsemium

Lethargy and aching, with headache and droopy eyes, often indicate this remedy. Fever and chills run up and down the spine, and heat or pressure may be felt in the face and nose. A person who needs Gelsemium often trembles and is shaky, or feels extremely dull. This remedy is often helpful for colds that come on in hot weather.

Hydrastis canadensis

This remedy relieves thick nasal discharge that irritates the throat.

Kali bichromicum

This helps relieve thick, greenish, irritating nasal discharge.

Kali iodatum

This remedy relieves runny nose with acrid watery discharge, with pain at the base of the nose.

Kali muriaticum

This helps relieve ear congestion with cracking sounds in the ear, worsened by the change in pressure.

Mercurius solubilis

A person who needs this remedy is extremely sensitive to temperatures, and experiences night sweats and drooling during sleep. Swollen lymph nodes and bad breath are other indications. The person’s nose may feel raw, and the tonsils or ears often become infected.

Phosphorus

A person whose colds go easily to the chest often responds to this remedy. One nostril may be blocked while the other runs. Hoarseness, laryngitis, and nosebleeds are other likely symptoms. The person often is thirsty for cold drinks and feels better from massage. People who need this remedy often feel weak, “spaced out,” and anxious or fearful when ill.

Rhus toxicodendron

If a cold begins with stiffness and body aches, especially during cool damp weather or weather changes, and leads to nasal congestion or sore throat, this remedy should come to mind. The person feels extremely restless and often paces or fidget. Warmth and motion bring relief, both physically and mentally.

Sulphur iodatum

This remedy relieves lingering symptoms (cough, nasal congestion) after a severe cold or flu.

Perioperative Health

The road to recovery starts with understanding what your body needs before, during, and after surgery. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.
  • Enjoy some ginger Reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting by taking 1 gram of encapsulated ginger powder 60 minutes before receiving general anesthesia
  • Think nutrition Eat a high-quality, balanced diet, and use nutritional supplements to prevent malnutrition that can impair recovery from surgery
  • Say good-bye to smoking Prevent poor surgery outcomes and many other health problems by kicking the habit for good
About This Condition
Major surgery causes serious stress to the body. The body’s immune system is weakened and gastrointestinal function is changed after major surgery, leaving the body vulnerable to infection and in a state of nutritional insufficiency. Steps can be taken using natural approaches to strengthen the body before and after surgery, enhance defenses, prevent complications, and speed recovery.
Healthy Lifestyle Tips
Smoking compromises overall health and is associated with poorer outcomes of many types of surgery. Smoking may lessen the nausea and vomiting commonly experienced after surgery due to effects of anesthesia, according to a preliminary study, but the disadvantages far outweigh this single possible benefit.
Holistic Options
Acupressure can be used to prevent nausea and vomiting. Wristbands designed to apply pressure to acupuncture points on the forearm were shown to effectively prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting in seven controlled trials and were as effective as an antinausea medication in another. One controlled trial found no benefit from acupressure wristbands. Acupuncture14 and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) of a wrist acupuncture point have also been shown to be effective for post-operative nausea and vomiting in controlled trials. A controlled comparison study found that electroacupuncture of the wrist points controlled post-operative nausea and vomiting as well as antinausea medication and better than TENS, but both electro-acupuncture and TENS helped more than no treatment. A comprehensive review of research on acupuncture, electroacupuncture, TENS, acupoint stimulation, and acupressure for post-operative nausea and vomiting found these techniques to be more effective than placebo and as effective as commonly prescribed medications in adults but not in children. However, laser stimulation of the acupuncture points on the wrists both before and after surgery was effective for children in one controlled trial.

Bell’s Palsy Homeopathy Remedies

Primary Remedies

Aconitum napellus

When one side of a person’s face becomes paralyzed, especially after being exposed to wind or cold air, this remedy may be helpful. A feeling of fear and agitation and a sudden onset of symptoms are strong indications for Aconitum napellus.

Agaricus

This remedy may be indicated in Bell’s palsy when the facial muscles on one side are stiff, and grimacing or twitching occurs in other parts of the face. People who need this remedy are often excitable, with senses that are overacute. Many people who need this remedy have deep anxiety about their health.

Cadmium sulphuratum

Facial paralysis (usually left-sided) that starts after exposure to wind, and is accompanied by chilliness or overwhelming weakness, suggests a need for this remedy. The person’s mouth may look distorted, and completely closing one of the eyes often is impossible.

Causticum

This remedy can be helpful when facial paralysis has developed gradually (most often on the right side). Opening and closing the mouth can be difficult, and the person may accidentally bite the tongue or the inside of the cheek. The person may be weak but restless, and tends to feel best when keeping warm.

Cocculus

One-sided facial paralysis, with pain or tension felt in the other cheek, especially when opening the mouth, suggests a need for this remedy. Weakness, dizziness, or numbness are other indications. The person may feel worse from lack of sleep or from being emotionally upset.

Nux vomica

One-sided facial paralysis (more often on the left) in a person who is irritable, impatient, and hypersensitive to odors, sounds, and light may indicate a need for this remedy. Cramping and constricting feelings may be felt, and problems may be worse from cold.

Platina (also called Platinum)

This remedy may be indicated for painless paralysis of the face, with facial distortion that raises one eyebrow or creates a “haughty” look. The person may also experience numbness in the lips and cheeks, or other body parts.

Other Remedies

Dulcamara

This remedy may be indicated when a person has one-sided facial paralysis that makes it difficult to speak. Dulcamara is indicated in many conditions that develop after exposure to cold and dampness, especially after chills in rainy weather. People who need this remedy are often inclined toward sinusitis, allergies, and back pain.

Periodontal Disease

Healthy gums can lead to more smiles and fewer visits to the dentist. Beat the bacteria that cause swollen gums and bad breath. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.
  • Overhaul your hygiene habits To kick gingivitis and prevent recurrences, brush and floss frequently, and get regular cleanings from a dental professional
  • Get some extra C For better overall gum health, take 300 mg of vitamin C a day, plus 300 mg of flavonoids, especially if your diet is low in fruits and vegetables
  • Discover CoQ10 Reduce gingivitis symptoms and repair damaged gum tissues by taking 50 to 60 mg a day of coenzyme Q10, a powerful antioxidant
About This Condition
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums (gingivae), usually caused by bacteria.
Periodontitis is a deeper and more serious inflammation of both the gingivae and tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth.
Both common conditions are often progressive and can eventually result in loss of the underlying bone that supports the teeth. After age 30, periodontal disease is responsible for more tooth loss than are dental cavities. Severe periodontitis sometimes requires surgery to repair damaged gum tissue.
Symptoms
Gingivitis is usually painless, although the gums may be red, swollen, and bleed easily with brushing. There can also be a bad taste in the mouth or persistent bad breath (halitosis). In advanced stages of gingivitis, the gums recede, exposing the nerve roots, and the teeth may become loose. This may be an indication of periodontitis.

Peptic Ulcer

Ulcer pain? Undo the damage. Peptic ulcers can cause serious discomfort and damage to the digestive system if left untreated. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.

  • Avoid irritants

Avoid smoking, aspirin and related drugs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), alcohol, coffee (including decaf), and tea to improve ulcer healing

  • Fight recurrences with fiber

Reduce the risk of new duodenal ulcers by getting enough fiber

  • Give zinc a go

Take 25 to 50 mg of this mineral a day to speed the repair of damaged tissue

  • Get a checkup

See a doctor to find out whether your ulcer is related to Helicobacter pylori infection

About This Condition

Peptic ulcers are erosions or open sores in the mucous lining of the stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). The term “peptic” distinguishes peptic ulcers from ulcerations that affect other parts of the body (e.g., diabetic leg ulcers).

Peptic ulcer should never be treated without proper diagnosis. They are usually caused by infection fromHelicobacter pylori (H. pylori). People with peptic ulcer due to infection should discuss conventional treatment directed toward eradicating the organism—various combinations of antibiotics, acid blockers, and bismuth—with a medical doctor. Ulcers can also be caused or aggravated by stress, alcohol, smoking, and dietary factors.

Symptoms

Peptic ulcers are occasionally painless. However, the most common symptom is a dull ache in the upper abdomen that usually occurs two to three hours after a meal; the ache is relieved by eating. Other common symptoms include weight loss, bloating, belching, and nausea. Untreated, peptic ulcers often bleed and may cause sharp burning pain in the area of the stomach or just below it.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips

Aspirin and related drugs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), alcohol, coffee (including decaf), and tea can aggravate or interfere with the healing of peptic ulcers. Smoking is also known to slow ulcer healing. Whether or not an ulcer is caused by infection, people with peptic ulcer should avoid use of these substances.

Holistic Options

Emotional stress has been shown to increase acid production in the stomach. The reported association between stress and peptic ulcer might be attributable to a stress-induced increase in gastric acidity. During the air raids of London in World War II, British physicians observed an increase of more than 50% in the incidence of ruptured peptic ulcers. More recently, an increased incidence of bleeding stomach ulcers was seen in survivors of the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake in Japan. Whether stress reduction techniques or psychological counseling helps prevent ulcers or ulcer recurrence has not been adequately studied in medical trials.

Bell’s Palsy -What is it?

When Bell’s palsy occurs, one side of the face becomes paralyzed, flat, and rigid; as a result, the other side (not paralyzed) may feel twisted and uncomfortable. The cause is not well-understood, but a person with these symptoms should be examined by a physician, to rule out other neurological problems. Although uncomfortable and disconcerting, this condition usually resolves itself in time, although it may take many months. For a remedy that suits the individual more specifically, see a homeopathic physician.

Anxiety

A panic attack that comes on suddenly with very strong fear (even fear of death) may indicate this remedy. A state of immense anxiety may be accompanied by strong palpitations, shortness of breath, and flushing of the face. Sometimes a shaking experience will be the underlying cause. Strong feelings of anxiety may also occur when a person is just beginning to come down with a flu or cold.

Argentum nitricum

This relieves apprehension or stage fright accompanied by agitation and a feeling of hurriedness. A physical sign corresponding to this medicine is stomach aches with belching, due to a slower digestion.

Arsenicum album

People who are deeply anxious about their health, and extremely concerned with order and security, often benefit from this remedy. Obsessive about small details and very neat, they may feel a desperate need to be in control of everything. Panic attacks often occur around midnight or the very early hours of the morning. The person may feel exhausted yet still be restless—fidgeting, pacing, and anxiously moving from place to place. These people may also have digestive problems or asthma attacks accompanied by anxiety.

Calcarea carbonica

This remedy is usually indicated for dependable, solid people who become overwhelmed from physical illness or too much work and start to fear a breakdown. Their thoughts can be muddled and confused when tired, which adds to the anxiety. Worry and bad news may agitate them, and a nagging dread of disaster (to themselves or others) may develop. Fear of heights and claustrophobia are also common. A person who needs this remedy is often chilly and sluggish, has a craving for sweets, and is easily fatigued.

Kali phosphoricum

When a person has been exhausted by overwork or illness and feels a deep anxiety and inability to cope, this remedy may help. The person is jumpy and oversensitive, and may be startled by ordinary sounds. Hearing unpleasant news or thinking of world events can aggravate the problems. Insomnia and an inability to concentrate may develop, increasing the sense of nervous dread. Eating, warmth, and rest often bring relief. Headaches, backaches, and nervous digestive upsets are often seen when this remedy is needed.

Lycopodium

Individuals likely to respond to this remedy feel anxiety from mental stress and suffer from a lack of confidence. They can be self-conscious and feel intimidated by people they perceive as powerful (yet may also swagger or be domineering toward those with whom they feel more comfortable). Taking on responsibility can cause a deep anxiety and fear of failure, although the person usually does well, once started on a task. Claustrophobia, irritability, digestive upsets with gas and bloating, and a craving for sweets are often seen when this remedy is needed.

Phosphorus

People who need this remedy are openhearted, imaginative, excitable, easily startled, and full of intense and vivid fears. Strong anxiety can be triggered by thinking of almost anything. Nervous and sensitive to others, they can overextend themselves with sympathy to the point of feeling exhausted and “spaced out” or even getting ill. They want a lot of company and reassurance, often feeling better from conversation or a back-rub. Easy flushing of the face, palpitations, thirst, and a strong desire for cold, refreshing foods are other indications for Phosphorus.

Pulsatilla

People who need this remedy often express anxiety as insecurity and clinginess, with a need for constant support and comforting. The person may be moody, tearful, whiny, even emotionally childish. (Pulsatilla is a very useful remedy for children.) Getting too warm or being in a stuffy room often increases anxiety. Fresh air and gentle exercise often bring relief. Anxiety around the time of hormonal changes (puberty, menstrual periods, or menopause) often is helped with Pulsatilla.

Other Remedies

Gelsemium

This relieves apprehension or stage fright accompanied by a feeling of general weakness, trembling, dizziness, headaches and difficulty to focus and recall memories.

Ignatia amara

Ignatia amara relieves symptoms caused by stress or emotions, with hypersensitivity to light, noises, pain and emotions. Physical symptoms such as a lump in the throat, localized headaches, and frequent yawning are often present. All symptoms are improved by distraction.

Natrum muriaticum

Deep emotions and a self-protective shyness can make these people seem reserved, aloof, and private. Even when feeling lonely, they tend to stay away from social situations, not knowing what to say or do. (Inhibitions sometimes leave completely if they turn to alcohol, which makes them feel embarrassed afterwards.) Easily hurt and offended, they can brood, bear grudges, dwell on unhappy feelings, and isolate themselves—refusing consolation even when they want it. However, they are often sympathetic listeners to other people’s problems. Claustrophobia, anxiety at night (with fears of robbers or intruders), migraines, and insomnia are often seen when this remedy is needed.

Silicea (also called Silica)

People who need this remedy are capable and serious, yet are also nervous, shy, and subject to bouts of temporary loss of confidence. Anxiety can be extreme when they are faced with a public appearance, interview, examination, or any new job or task. Worry and overwork can bring on headaches, difficulty concentrating, and states of exhaustion, oversensitivity, and dread. Responsible and diligent, they often overreact and devote attention to tiny details—making their worries (and their work) more difficult. They often have low stamina and come down with colds, sore throats, or other illnesses after working hard or being under stress.

Parkinson’s Disease

Get support for Parkinson’s by focusing on fitness and nutrition. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.
  • Discover coenzyme Q10 Slow the disease’s progression by taking 1,200 mg a day of this powerful nutrient
  • Get support from C and E Help delay the need for medication by supplementing with a daily combination of 3,000 mg of vitamin C and 3,200 IU of vitamin E
  • Adjust your diet If you are taking a drug that contains levodopa, eat a low-protein breakfast and lunch, followed by a high-protein dinner to enhance the action of levodopa and improve symptoms
  • Work in a workout Get involved in a regular exercise program to increase strength, flexibility, and balance
About This Condition
Parkinson’s disease results from progressive damage to the nerves in the area of the brain responsible for controlling muscle tone and movement. The damaged cells are those needed to produce a neurotransmitter (chemical messenger in the brain) called dopamine, so people with Parkinson’s disease manufacture inadequate amounts of dopamine.
Parkinson’s disease occurs primarily, but not exclusively, in the elderly. Parkinson-like symptoms can also be caused by prescription and illicit drugs.
Symptoms
Symptoms include a fixed facial expression, wide-eyed stare with infrequent blinking, fluttering of the eyelids, drooling, illegible handwriting, monotone voice, and rhythmic movement of the fingers, hand, foot, or arm when at rest. People with Parkinson’s disease often have difficulty getting out of bed or a soft chair, and may tend to stand stooped over and walk leaning forward with limited arm-swing and small, shuffling steps. Depression and decreased mental functioning are also common symptoms in advanced stages.
Healthy Lifestyle Tips
People with Parkinson’s disease are at higher than normal risk for osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency. Regular weight-bearing exercise, exposure to sunlight, and a variety of supplements and dietary changes may be helpful in preventing osteoporosis.
A twice-weekly, 14-week program of intensive exercise has been shown to significantly improve the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.Athletic training included resistance exercises in water to increase strength, as well as exercises increasing flexibility and balance.
There is substantial preliminary evidence that exposure to certain organochlorine insecticides (e.g., lindane [Kwell®, Kildane®, Scabene®] and dieldrin [Dieldrite]) may contribute to the development of Parkinson’s disease. In California, death from Parkinson’s disease increased by about 40% in all Californian counties reporting use of restricted agricultural pesticides since the 1970s compared with those reporting none. Avoiding contact with pesticides and pesticide residues may be an important preventive measure for Parkinson’s and other diseases. Interestingly, consumption of the fat substitute olestra appears to increase elimination of certain organochlorine pesticides in the feces. However, no scientific studies have tested olestra as a possible treatment or preventive measure against Parkinson’s disease. Moreover, since olestra consumption may be associated with other health risks, such as depletion of beta-carotene, people with Parkinson’s should consult with their doctor before consuming products containing olestra.

Anxiety

Short periods of anxiety are experienced by almost everyone, but some individuals are more inclined to be troubled with this problem. A sensation of discomfort or apprehension is experienced (both emotional and physical) and, although the person may be aware of a reason for feeling insecure or worried, the cause is sometimes difficult to identify. Some individuals experience “panic attacks”—very distressing episodes accompanied by breathing problems, palpitations, and intense (but temporary) feelings of both agitation and helplessness. Homeopathic medicines relieve the physical and mental signs, without causing drowsiness or decreasing alertness.

Parasites

Homeopathy FAQs- dosage, Frequency & Dilutions

DOSAGE AND FREQUENCY

Do homeopathic medicines act quickly?

Yes. When used for acute, occasional illnesses, homeopathic medicines can take effect very quickly, especially if they are taken as soon as symptoms appear. For chronic disorders such as asthma, migraines and allergies, longer treatments are needed to see sustained relief.

How frequently should I take homeopathic medicines?

Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional or on the product label. When it comes to single medicines packaged in multi-dose tubes, general dosage instructions are 5pellets 3 times a day.

As a general rule of thumb when self-medicating, you can increase the frequency when the symptom is sudden and acute, then decrease frequency with improvement. For example, upon twisting your ankle, you can take Arnica pellets every 10 minutes 3 to 4 times and then 3 times a day as needed.

DILUTIONS

Which homeopathic dilution should I choose?

The level of dilution in homeopathy does not correspond to strength. A 30C is not stronger than a 6C. The difference is in the level of action. Lower dilutions, such as 6C, are more suitable for local symptoms (such as a bruise, a sore throat or heartburn).High dilutions, such as 30C, are more appropriate for more general conditions that affect the entire body (such as a fever, allergies or a skin rash) and the mind (such as sleeplessness or apprehension).

Papanicolaou Smear Test (Abnormal)

Caring for your cervix is a must, especially for sexually active women. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.

  • Check out folic acid

Ask your doctor if taking 10 mg a day can help reverse severe cervical dysplasia

  • Fill up on fruits and veggiesHelp keep your cervix healthy by getting the nutrients you need from fruits and vegetables, especially tomatoes and dark yellow or orange vegetables, such as carrots and squash
  • Practice safe sex

Reduce your risk for cervical dysplasia by postponing sexual activity until you’re older, limiting sexual partners, and using barrier methods of contraception

  • Steer clear of cigarette smoke

Kick the habit and avoid secondhand smoke to reduce the risk of severe dysplasia

  • Plan a follow-up If your pap smear detects an abnormality, see your healthcare provider for a repeat exam to determine whether additional tests or treatments are needed
About This Condition

Sexually active teenagers and women 20 to 65 years old are advised to have periodic Pap smears, where a small amount of tissue is swabbed from the cervix and examined for evidence of precancerous or cancerous changes. A pap smear is considered abnormal when abnormal cervical cells are found. Cervical dysplasia is a term used to describe abnormal cervical cells taken during the pap smear. Cervical dysplasia is usually graded according to its severity, which can range from mild inflammation to precancerous changes to localized cancer.

If an abnormality is detected early, the doctor can prescribe effective treatment before the problem becomes more serious. Cervical cancer is a common, sometimes fatal disease. It is now known that human papilloma virus (HPV), also the cause of genital warts, is the major cause of cervical dysplasia.

Symptoms

There are no symptoms of cervical dysplasia until the disease has progressed into advanced cancer. Therefore, it is crucial that sexually active women, or women over age 20, have yearly Pap smears until the age of 65. Women who experience bleeding between menstrual periods, bleeding after intercourse, abnormal vaginal discharge, abdominal pain or swelling, urinary symptoms, or pelvic pain should be evaluated by a healthcare provider, even if it is not the regular time for a Pap test.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of cervical dysplasia, and increases the likelihood that mild forms of dysplasia will progress to more severe forms. Quitting smoking and avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke are essential for this and many other health reasons.

Certain sexual behaviors are consistently associated with cervical dysplasia, such as becoming sexually active at an early age and having multiple sexual partners. Avoiding these behaviors may reduce the risk of cervical dysplasia. For those who are sexually active, using barrier methods of contraception, such as a condom or diaphragm, is associated with reduced risk of cervical dysplasia.

Homeopathy FAQs Safety & Usage

SAFETY

Do homeopathic medicines cause side effects?

Used for more than 200 years, homeopathic medicines have a remarkable safety record. Homeopathic medicines with a dilution above 4C or 8X are safe with a very low risk of side effects and no contraindications.

Can homeopathic medicines be taken in conjunction with other medications?

Micro-dosed homeopathic medicines above 4C or 8X are safe. They can be taken with other conventional medicines, herbs or supplements, and are sometimes recommended to complement other treatments.

Can I give homeopathic medicines to my children?

As with any over-the-counter medicine, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before treating children younger than 2 years of age to make sure the symptoms or the disease can be safely treated. Homeopathic medicines are among the safest over-the-counter medicines, especially for children. The dosage is generally the same for adults and children since the activity of homeopathic medicines is not based on body weight. Please see package labeling for specific dosage recommendations and warnings.

Are homeopathic medicines safe to use while pregnant or breast-feeding?

If pregnant or breast-feeding, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before use.

If I’m lactose intolerant, can I take homeopathic pellets or tablets?

The amount of lactose in homeopathic pellets and tablets is very small and will not trigger symptoms caused by lactose intolerance. Pellets and the tablets are usually taken under the tongue (sublingual absorption), so the amount of lactose that reaches the intestine, where lactose intolerance symptoms are triggered, is even less.

For small homeopathic pellets (for example, Oscillococcinum®), 1 gram (1 unit-dose) contains 150 mg of lactose, equivalent to 1/80th of a cup of milk.

For large homeopathic pellets (such as in blue tubes), 5 pellets contain 42.2 mg of lactose, equivalent to 1/300th of a cup of milk.

For large homeopathic tablets (for example, Coldcalm®), 2 tablets per dose contain 492.5 mg of lactose, equivalent to 1/24th of a cup of milk.

USAGE

Can I use homeopathic treatments by myself or do I have to have a doctor’s help?

Since homeopathic medicines can be a fast, reliable solution, self-medication may be sufficient for treating acute, non-serious pain or disorders. However, if symptoms continue, you must consult your doctor for a precise diagnosis and a suitable course of treatment.

Can homeopathic medicines be used to treat chronic or recurring illnesses?

For patients with chronic or recurring illnesses, homeopathic treatments aim to reduce the intensity and frequency of episodes or outbreaks, as with allergies or herpes. Chronic or recurring illnesses will require the attention of a healthcare professional knowledgeable in homeopathy and may require more time for improvement.

Can homeopathic medicines prevent certain diseases?

Homeopathic medicines are indicated for relief of symptoms—not prevention of diseases.

The indication on the label of my homeopathic medicine does not match the symptom for which my doctor prescribed it. Why?

The same single medicine may be useful for several different conditions. For example, Gelsemium 30C can be indicated for stress or fever; Sepia 30C can be indicated for mood swings or symptoms of hot flashes.

Due to the small size of the container, only the most common indication for each medicine is on the label. Therefore, the condition for which your doctor prescribed the medicine may not be listed.

Should I try not to touch the pellets or tablets with my hands?

You should avoid touching homeopathic medicines with your bare hands. They are no less effective when touched, but the manufacturer takes great care to avoid any contamination and to make sure that only the original substance is diluted.

Can I have mint or coffee while using homeopathic medicines?

The first homeopathic physicians told their patients not to ingest or inhale any substance, such as coffee, tea, chocolate or mint, which could interfere with the course of recovery. As the action of homeopathic medicines was progressively established, it became clear that there is no interference between mint, coffee or tea, and a homeopathic treatment in general. However, it is best to take homeopathic medicines apart from meals and in a mouth free of strong flavors to maximize absorption.

Ask your doctor if you are taking anything that could have an action opposite to what you are trying to achieve with homeopathic medicines. For instance, if you want to reduce stress, avoid caffeine.

Where should I keep my homeopathic medicines?

Homeopathic medicines should be stored in a dry place, away from heat and away from fragrant substances that could contaminate them. Keep the medicines in their original containers. Keep homeopathic medicines and all other medicines out of the reach of children.

How much sugar is in homeopathic medicines?

Pellets contain sugar and lactose (milk sugar). 5 pellets taken 4 times a day (20 pellets) contain 1 gram of sugar (or 1/5th of a teaspoon). One unit-dose contains 1 gram of sugar (or 1/5th of a teaspoon). Syrups usually contain more sugar: the exact amount is given on the packaging.

Do homeopathic medicines have an expiration date?

Most homeopathic medicines have a 5-year expiration date. The expiration date is based on stability studies to determine how long the active and inactive ingredients remain stable.

Are homeopathic medicines sensitive to heat, cold, light or radiation?

Homeopathic medicines are sensitive to excessive heat (above 115 ?F). Liquid forms (eye drops, liquid drops, syrups and liquid unit-doses) should not be allowed to freeze. Homeopathic medicines are not sensitive to radio frequencies and X-rays such as the ones used in airports. They are sensitive to microwaves and long exposure to intense light (sunlight or UV light).

Keep homeopathic medicines in their original containers, and store the containers in a dry place away from heat.

Keep homeopathic medicines and all other medicines out of the reach of children.

What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a therapeutic method that uses medicines made from micro-doses of natural substances. Homeopathic medicines are used to relieve symptoms associated with a wide range of acute health conditions such as allergies, coughs, colds, flu, stress, arthritis pain, muscle pain, teething and much more. With the help of a trained health professional, you may also use these medicines to relieve symptoms of more serious conditions and many chronic diseases.

The word “homeopathy” is Greek and means “similar suffering.” Its principle is: Any active substance that is capable of causing a set of symptoms in a healthy person when administered in high doses can eliminate similar symptoms in a sick person if it is used in a very low dosage.

Here are some examples:

You are stung by a bee and experience a sudden, sharp, burning pain. The area rapidly becomes swollen, pink and itchy. The pain is relieved by a cold compress. These symptoms are relieved by a homeopathic preparation of the honeybee (Apis mellifica), which contains very low doses of the same active substances that caused the pain and swelling.

You suffer from hay fever with spasmodic sneezing, profuse watery nasal discharge, and intense itching in the eyes and nose. The symptoms are relieved by fresh air. A homeopathic medicine made from the onion (Allium cepa) will relieve these symptoms that are similar to those caused by chopping onions.

How are homeopathic medicines made?

Homeopathic medicines are made from plants, minerals or animals. After undergoing identification and quality control procedures, these substances, or strains, are diluted using processes specific to homeopathy. They are repeatedly and systematically diluted. Several scales are used to indicate the dilution levels; these are the two most common scales:

  • The C scale means that each dilution is 100 times more diluted than the previous one: 1C is 100 times more diluted than the strain, 2C is 100 times more diluted than 1C, 3C is 100 times more diluted than 2C, etc. A vigorous agitation (succussion) occurs after each dilution. In the U.S., the most common dilutions are 6C, 9C, 12C and 30C.

  • The X scale means that each dilution is 10 times more diluted than the previous one.

After the medicated solution is prepared, it is infused into pellets, tablets, syrups, gels, ointments, eye drops, suppositories or other forms.

How do I read the label?

As a drug, a homeopathic medicine is required to list its active ingredient on its label. You’ll see on the label the name of the plant, animal or mineral source of the medicine. This name is listed in Latin, such as Apis mellifica for the honey bee or Allium cepa for the red onion. The strain name is followed by its dilution level, like Apis mellifica 30C or Allium cepa 6C.

How do homeopathic medicines work?

The exact mechanism of action of homeopathic medicines is still being researched. To date, the theory is that homeopathic medicines stimulate the body to rebalance itself. This is why they work best when taken at the onset of symptoms.

What is the difference between homeopathic medicines and other drugs, herbs or supplements?

First, you should know that homeopathic medicines are regulated as drugs by the FDA under the 1938 Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. This distinguishes them from vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids or enzymes, which are regulated as food. This means that you can easily find information on the packaging. Like with all drugs, homeopathic medicines are required to be labeled with clear directions and indications, active ingredients, recommended dosages, etc.

Additionally, there are two primary distinctions for homeopathic medicines:

1) Micro-dose levels—The active ingredient of a homeopathic medicine is the DILUTION of the plant, animal or mineral from which it is made; therefore, it is considered non-toxic. Supplements, herbs, vitamins, most common drugs and other such items have much higher doses.

2) Principle of how they work—The active ingredients in homeopathic medicines (the diluted plants, animals and minerals) relieve the same symptoms they cause at full strength (i.e., a micro-dose of coffee beans helps nervousness). Supplements, herbs, vitamins, most common drugs and other such items work using a different principle. Additionally, homeopathic medicines are different from vaccines; one cannot vaccinate with a homeopathic medicine.

No interaction has been observed between homeopathic medicines on one side, and conventional medicines, herbs or supplements on the other. This might indicate they their respective modes of action are very different. Because it is difficult to trace the action of micro-dosed homeopathic medicines, more research is needed to fully understand their detailed mode of action.

Are homeopathic medicines safe?

Homeopathic medicines have been used for more than 200 years and have established a remarkable safety record over that time. They offer some of the safest choices for self-treatment. To ensure the highest level of safety, carefully read all instructions and warnings on the labels and keep all drugs, including homeopathic medicines, out of the reach of children.

In high dilutions, above 4C or 8X dilutions, the risk of side effects is very small.

Should I take a homeopathic medicine with meals?

Most homeopathic medicines are melt-away pellets or tablets that are meant to be absorbed into your bloodstream by dissolving quickly under your tongue. To maximize absorption, you should take your homeopathic medicine when you mouth doesn’t contain food or flavors. They can be taken just before or after meals.

How frequently should I take a homeopathic medicine?

How frequently you take a homeopathic medicine depends partly on the degree of dilution and partly on the acuteness of the symptoms.

  • Low dilutions (6C) have an action that is limited in time. Use these dilutions for local symptoms, such as those that you could point to with a finger. Typically, you would take them frequently (from every 15 minutes to every 2 hours). Local symptoms are the first to appear during the onset of a disease, and at this stage, homeopathic medicines must be given frequently according to the acuteness of the symptoms.

  • Medium dilutions (9C, 12C) are for symptoms affecting the whole body: a fever, a rash, general fatigue, etc. These symptoms appear after the onset, during the established phase of the illness, along with the existing local symptoms. The frequency depends on the acuteness of the symptoms.

  • High dilutions (15C, 30C) are for the highest degree of similarity between the symptoms caused by the strain and the symptoms you have. Use them for an ensemble of local, general and mental, or even behavioral, symptoms. The frequency depends on the acuteness of the symptoms.

When you see improvement, take the medicine less often. For example, cut the frequency from 5 pellets every hour to 5 pellets three times a day. Stop taking the medicine when symptoms disappear.

Do I have to give up certain things if I choose to use homeopathic medicines?

Contrary to popular opinion, mint and coffee do not diminish the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines. Although homeopathic medicines and other commonly used medications work in different ways, they are compatible and can often complement each other.
